Winterreise was Schubert’s great Song cycle for baritone and piano, which I have known and loved for many years. It tells the story of a young man, in love and hopeful of marriage, who is rejected by his beloved and who, as a result, embarks on a physical and emotional journey. He endures the hardship of winter along with his sense of rejection and growing isolation and alienation. His mood veers between defiant and dejected, his memories both haunt him and support him. At the end he seems to sink towards depression or maybe a stark acceptance of his fate. I have tried to capture in my prints the mood and rhythms of the songs as well as the bones of the journey travelled.
